7 Can’t Miss Bars in Mississippi

7 Can’t Miss Bars in Mississippi

Words by Paige Townley

From Jackson to Oxford, Starkville to Tupelo, the cocktail scene in Mississippi is on point. With chic rooftop bars, longstanding neighborhood pubs, and even tiki bars, there’s never a shortage of carefully crafted cocktails, spirits, or locally brewed beers.

Here are 7 can’t miss bars that will have you raising a glass to the Magnolia State:

The Apothecary

Situated in Jackson’s trendy Fondren district is The Apothecary. Known by locals as a hidden gem, The Apothecary is located in what once was a pharmacy showroom of Brent’s Drugs. The speakeasy-style lounge focuses on classic cocktails, each inspired by the history of the pharmacy’s soda fountain yet with a modern twist and local flavors.

The Boxcar

There’s perhaps no better view—or cocktail—found in all of Meridian than those at The Boxcar. Located atop the historic Threefoot Hotel, the bar’s menu includes a variety of innovative cocktails, local craft beers, and shareable small plates.

The Coop

Keep an eye on all that’s going on in The Square in Oxford with your favorite beverage in hand at The Coop. Situated atop the Graduate Hotel near the Ole Miss campus, The Coop features a unique chicken-themed motif that adds to the Southern-themed cocktails. The bar has even been named as one of the best rooftop bars in the country.

Fondren Public

Jackson’s Fondren Public supports all things Mississippi with its wide range of offerings. The pub boasts 24 beers on tap, many made by Mississippi breweries, and cocktails that feature spirits from in-state distilleries. Adding to the appeal of Fondren Public is the chance to get in on some friendly competition while there: the property includes a shuffleboard table and bocce ball courts.

The Guest Room

The Guest Room is Starkville’s best kept secret, and for good reason: the entrance is down an unnamed alley and through a nondescript door. In fact, there’s only the faint glow of a porchlight to mark its location. There is a major reward, however, once you arrive. The cocktail bar offers one of the largest bourbon selections in all of Mississippi, along with an extensive cocktail and spirit list, in an incredibly sophisticated atmosphere.

Key City Brewing

Key City Brewing got its start in 2018, and the Vicksburg-based brewery never looked back. The brewery is led by head brewer Zack Erickson, who was inspired by Belgium brewing traditions while on his honeymoon with his wife Kaitlin. At any given time, Key City Brewing has upwards of 20 beers on tap, always adding new options to the menu.

Queen’s Reward

One of the most unique experiences in Mississippi can be found at Queen’s Reward in Tupelo. Opened in 2016, Queen’s Reward is the state’s first and only meadery. The award-winning meadery produces meads using Mississippi honey, which are all available for purchase by the bottle.
