They say there’s no place like home for the holidays, but this year, there’s good reason to roam—at least as far as Greenwood, Mississippi. The rich history and culture of this Mississippi Delta town is already an easy draw—it’s where the blues originated and it’s home to some of the most iconic southern cooking you can find. But at the holidays, this historic Delta city turns the magic up even more to offer a season that’s sure to make any spirit bright.
All of the classic holiday festivities can be found and enjoyed throughout Greenwood, just with a Delta-style spin. So between checking out the unique town, strolling through its shops, dining at one of its many culinary establishments, and enjoying the cool, southern breeze, there’s a lot to fit into the holiday schedule, and the best part is that it can all be enjoyed with family, friends, and all you hold dear.
The annual festivities kick off with the Citywide Holiday Open House, a multi-night event that includes carriage rides around dramatically decorated town, Santa sightings, fun giveaways, and even food and beverages to try at a variety of local shops.
The magic of the season continues with a special Christmas parade, the Roy Martin Delta Band Festival and Christmas Parade, that culminates in a spectacular show of fireworks high above the Yazoo River.
Those who anxiously await the wonderous music of the season will enjoy many events on the town’s schedule. There will be a Buford singing event at the Alluvian, which features four sisters and their grandmother who was once an opera singer. David Phelps will also be in concert for his “It Must Be Christmas” tour, a local church will be hosting a singing Christmas tree, and topping it all off is the Greenwood Chorale’s performance of “The Sounds of Christmas.”
The fabulously festive plans don’t end there. In addition to other opportunities to enjoy carriage rides around town and even a carousel on the river, there will be holiday markets to peruse all sorts of unique must-have goods. Bakers and culinary enthusiasts will want to be sure to sign up gingerbread-making classes or cookie decorating –or both!—at the Viking Cooking School.
And of course it’s not the holidays without an opportunity to take a photo or two with Santa, and there are even plans for that. So mark the dates on your calendar and make the plans with those you love because a visit to Greenwood is sure to be a holiday hit.
