It’s never been so easy to live well in the Magnolia State
Words by Paige Townley
With the new year comes new opportunities to commit to a healthy lifestyle. From heart-healthy restaurants to attractions that promote fitness, relaxation and rejuvenation, travelers can thrive in Mississippi—mind, body, and spirit.
A number of restaurants around the state offer menus with healthier options. Leading the move to better eating is Mississippi chef, author, and entrepreneur Katie Dixon. One of Mississippi’s leading advocates for healthy eating, Katie is at the helm of two restaurants, Birdhouse Café in Hattiesburg, and Birdie’s Nourished Kitchen in Jackson. Both serve up a variety of heart-healthy dishes that incorporate delicious superfoods, including acai bowls, salads, and even healthy twists to traditional Southern dishes.
There’s so much to see and experience in Mississippi, from its unique history and charming communities to its many natural wonders. Exploring it all is a great excuse to get out and get active anywhere in the state. Mississippi has a variety of paved and unpaved bike trails, including the Natchez Trace. The Natchez Trace is one of the state’s most popular and scenic destinations for cyclists with more than 300 miles of parkway, and all along the way are historic sites and markers telling the story of its history.
For those who prefer to explore on foot, Mississippi also offers plenty of opportunities for hiking. In fact, the state is home to 25 pristine state parks, which offer diverse terrain, lakes, rivers, and overall beautiful scenery.
Relaxation and Rejuvenation
Rest and relaxation are a vital part of living well, and spas across the state offer calming spaces to enjoy treatments focused on taking care of body and mind.
The 7,000-square-foot Alluvian Spa is situated in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, and it offers a wide range of services, including face and body care, massage therapy, therapeutic baths, and even cosmetic and hair services.
Wellness is always a focus at The Spa at Beau Rivage. Located in the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, the spa’s menu includes all of the treatments needed to feel rejuvenated and refreshed, and it even includes a quiet solarium where guests can unwind and relax.
Senses Spa & Salon is the go-to spot for anyone looking to indulge the senses. Located in the IP Casino in Biloxi, Senses Spa & Salon has a thorough menu of offerings – from massages and body treatments to facials and nail services – all of which are inspired by nature.
Whatever healthy resolution you’re hoping to keep this year, there’s a way to make it happen in Mississippi.
