Celebrate Fall in Blue Ridge—Georgia’s Coolest Mountain Town
Looking for a destination to truly get away from it all this fall while still taking in all the beauty the season has to offer? A fall getaway in Blue Ridge, Georgia, promises warm days and cool mountain nights, beautiful fall color and endless opportunities for dining, wining and outdoor fun, though not necessarily in that order. Georgia’s coolest mountain town is only 90 miles north of Atlanta, but it feels like a million miles away, as the road reaches the Georgia mountains and the colors turn brilliant.
Where to Stay
Rent a cozy cabin or an upscale vacation home with a breathtaking view of the mountains or alongside a rushing stream on the Toccoa River. A cabin offers privacy, room for everyone, and the convenience of a fully equipped kitchen. Or, take a different approach and stay in downtown Blue Ridge at a bed and breakfast, loft, or the new downtown Hampton Inn, where you’ll be close to restaurants and night spots.
What to Do Outdoors
There’s nowhere better to experience all of the colors of fall than aboard the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. The railway winds along the Toccoa River from Blue Ridge to McCaysville, Georgia, and it’s a great way to take in the scenery while still enjoying a leisurely morning. Even better: it’s only a half-day excursion, so that leaves plenty of time for exploring the afternoon.
Another option to see Blue Ridge’s stunning fall color up close is to head to Springer Mountain, the start of the Appalachian Trail. A more unique way to enjoy the fall season is checking out Blue Ridge’s numerous waterfalls, which are easily accessible via hiking.
Where to Dine
Is it even fall without a visit to the apple orchard? Blue Ridge offers two spots for apple shopping. One is Mercier Orchards, the South’s largest family-owned orchard. Start your day with a big country breakfast onsite before perusing the available fruit, which also includes strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries when in season. No visit to Mercier Orchards is complete without tasting one of their delicious fried pies, apple cider, and fritters.
Another spot for apple picking and delicious fried pies is The Folk Collaborative, a locally owned and operated old fashioned apple orchard. Pick up a cup of coffee at its coffee bar, shop its local herb teas and baked goods in the mercantile, and even take a wagon ride before or after checking out its orchard.
Blue Ridge also boasts seven local breweries to enjoy local craft beer and two wineries, all of which not only offer breathtaking mountain views but also authentic local brews, vintages, and cuisine.
Where to Shop
The town of Blue Ridge may be all about the outdoors, but it doesn’t lack in arts and culture. The community has quite the artsy vibe and a vibrant arts scene with upscale shops and galleries. From vintage finds to locally-made gifts and all sorts of specialty shops, downtown Blue Ridge offers a shop for it all.
