Words by Ashley Locke
Usually when you’re on the road during the holiday season, you’re focused on making it to your destination—but if you find yourself on the Interstate in Alabama, there’s one pit-stop you’ve got to make. The three minute drive from I65 to Downtown Cullman will be the best detour of your life!
Driving into Cullman during the holidays feels like happening upon a southern Stars Hollow. The twinkling downtown Christmas lights set the stage for the movie-worthy scene, and everyone in town seems to be in the spirit of the season. The sidewalks are bustling with people hunting down the perfect gifts for their friends, family, and loved ones—and when it comes to shopping, Cullman delivers.
Music is always playing in the Warehouse District, which runs along 1st Ave NE. Local shops line the beautifully manicured streets, and the decorated storefronts invite you in. The first stop should be Karma’s Coffee House—a must for holiday drinks that will perk you up before a long day of shopping. After sipping on a cozy, warm drink, the world is your oyster—The Warehouse District has everything from jewelry to toys.
Ashley Mercantile is a one-of-a-kind shop offering unique and high-end gifts for everyone on your list. Inside, you’ll discover luxury goods, handmade cookware, and vintage-inspired children’s toys. Browsing the shelves, you’ll feel a warm nostalgia as if you’ve stepped back in time. Monograms Plus is another Cullman staple that puts a personalized touch on every gift. For over 20 years, they’ve been known as the go-to business for all things monogrammed—but their shop also includes cozy pajamas, hilarious socks, meaningful jewelry, and home decor.
The street is a shopping wonderland with a long line of must-visit shops, including Lavish Boutique, a women’s clothing store; Platform, a boutique geared toward teens; and JK Taylor, where you can find the latest trends alongside pre-loved Louis Vuitton. Don’t forget to stop for a delicious dessert at Flavors Bakery before you leave The Warehouse District!
Near The Warehouse District in another part of downtown, Southern Accents is full of vintage gems. The carefully curated shop features historic pieces like doors and lighting—pieces rescued from old buildings, churches, and homes from all across the United States. Nearby, a welcoming green house sits on the corner. The shop, Three Pears, is the pinnacle of womens’ shopping in Cullman—and the shoe collection is unlike anywhere else. If you’re having a hard time finding a gift for that special someone, the women inside can help you pick out the perfect piece. Just a few blocks away, White Willow features incredible high-end furniture and home decor with incredible blown glass ornaments. At O-Baby, you’ll find the cutest blankets, clothing, toys, and accessories for babies and newborns. That’s just the beginning of all there is to explore!
Next time you’re driving down I65, don’t ignore the signs. Cullman is a Hallmark-worthy small town that will put you in the holiday spirit—and you’ll never have more fun checking off your holiday shopping list!
