Summer hasn’t officially started yet, but we’re in a summer state of mind. This season our travel dreams are inspired by the nostalgia of our past, before computers and cell phones became go-to entertainment. That’s right—we’re eyeing all the outdoor activities.
The perfect place to spend an outdoorsy weekend? Macon. Located right in the heart of Georgia, the city spans creeks, plains, rivers, and rolling hills. In fact, the Ocmulgee River runs right through it! There’s so much to do, but here are Good Grit’s 7 favorite outdoor activities in Macon, Georgia:
1. Kayaking/Canoeing the Ocmulgee River
Get a unique view of the city when you paddle the Ocmulgee River! Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions has canoe and kayak rentals for first-timers and experienced boaters alike. You can choose between a 2 hour float or a 6 hour half-day adventure on the water, starting at Amerson River Park. It’s a fun experience for the whole family!
2. Lane Southern Orchards
What’s better than sitting on a front porch rocking chair with fresh peach ice cream? Not much! At the Lane Southern Orchards Roadside Market, you can enjoy homemade ice cream, shop for fresh produce, and let your kids play on the farm-themed playground. There’s even a cafe on site if you want to grab lunch!
3. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park
History lovers won’t want to miss this slice of history in Macon. The museum features over 2,000 artifacts, and the outdoor Earth Lodge has floors that date back to 1015. You can also hike one of the many beautiful trails that take you through wetlands, fields, and forests. The mounds aren’t open quite yet, but they will be soon! 4. Lake Tobesofkee
Love beaches? Love camping? Love boating? Love disc golf? You can find all of that and more at Lake Tobesofkee! Spend all day relaxing on one of the three white sand beaches, or water skiing and fishing on the lake. It’s everything you could ask for, all in one place!
5. Third Street Park
There’s nothing more magical than the cherry blossoms that line Third Street Park, especially if you visit during the peak bloom in March. Pick up lunch to-go from one of Macon’s many incredible restaurants, then enjoy a picnic among the trees while the fountain provides peaceful background noise.
6. Amerson River Park
Amerson River Park is packed with fun—you could easily spend a full day there, enjoying the bluffs overlooking the river, beautiful forests, wetlands, and acres of peaceful meadow. There’s a handicap-usable playground, miles of trails, places to kayak or float, and so much more. Plus, with 180 acres, there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy it.
7. Macon Dog Park
If you don’t like to travel without your pet, don’t worry—there’s fun for your pup too! The Macon Dog Park is a leash-free greenspace where your furry friend can run wild! There’s space for large and small dogs, a creek that runs through the park, and plenty of picnic tables. Your dog might never want to leave!
