Travel Like a Local: Durham, North Carolina

Explore a few of our favorite Durham destinations
Words by Ashley Locke

Durham, North Carolina, is in the midst of a cultural renaissance. The city has become a hub for chefs, artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. The influx of creatives and outpouring of talent have made it a place where people want to live—but also a place where people want to visit. The opening of award-winning restaurants, hip breweries, live music venues, and art galleries has only increased Durham’s appeal.

The city is a perfect combination of the urban and outdoors. Besides its newly developing cultural scene, Durham is known for its enduring natural beauty. The naturescape is stunning year-round, with hiking and biking trails, state parks, nature preserves, and river views. No matter where in the city you are, a trailhead isn’t far away.

Though Asheville usually gets all the hype for its brewery scene, Durham has its own—and it’s thriving! Local breweries with pet-friendly patios are the ideal place to wind down after a day on the trails. Stocked with pilsners, stouts, IPAs (India pale ales), and sours, there’s something for every beer lover to sip on.

When the travel bug bites, pack your bags and hit the road toward the hidden gem that is Durham. There’s no doubt you’ll leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
