Travel north from the sandy beaches of Florida and one of the first bodies of water you’ll hit is Georgia’s Lake Country, a surprising destination in middle Georgia that meets its visitors with small town charm, rich history, and friendly faces. It’s the perfect getaway for a weekend couples retreat or a once-every-few-years family reunion. Not only will Georgia’s Lake Country gift you with its beautifully packaged breathtaking views, but you’ll unwrap that present to find a vibrant community of local shops, restaurants, and activities for all ages to enjoy. Made up of four different communities: Milledgeville, Eatonton, Greensboro, and Madison, we’re breaking down where to eat, play, shop, and stay. From luxurious accommodations to delicious local dives, adventure awaits you in Georgia’s Lake Country.
Eat
We’re big believers that the best way to experience a new place is to eat your way through it. You may not find it by the big sign out front (because there isn’t one) but ask any local where to eat and they’ll direct you to The Silver Moon. As you enter you may not find a hostess but an old-fashioned chalk board to write your name on and wait your turn to be seated. Everything on the menu is amazing, but you will be disappointed if you don’t order the ‘Hot Roasted Corn & Crab Dip.’ Okay, maybe the Philly Cheesesteak Eggrolls too. Another honorable mention has to be the Farmview Market in Madison. The meat is butchered in-house, and the grocery store will provide everything you need to stock up on local, natural ingredients to cook during your stay.
Play
Wine plus woods, need we say more? In Milledgeville, enjoy an evening stroll through the walking paths of Lockerly Arboretum (a home for trees). The grounds host a variety of stunning native and ornamental collections perfect for nature lovers. Take the kids for a day of fishing or check out the weekly calendar for a “Wine in the Woods” event! Of course, you don’t want to forget all the lake activities that await you in this popular lake community. Go on an adventure with boat and jet ski rental, camp on the water, and enjoy outdoor fun and relaxation at Lake Oconee or Lake Sinclair.
Shop
All four communities of Georgia’s Lake Country boast shops on almost every corner that feature the craft of Georgian artists. A local favorite is Genuine Georgia – an artisan marketplace, located in Greensboro. Here you can explore all kinds of one-of-a-kind art from some of the state’s most creative makers. Not only can you shop what’s on the floor, but you can connect with artists directly for custom commissions. Stepping through its whimsical entryway, this corner shop always has something new for you to discover.
Stay
Retreat to luxury on the lake at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee. It’s the number one recommended place to stay during your visit to Georgia’s Lake Country. Here, you can rest fireside as you enjoy s’mores after a long day of playful outings. It’s serene views of the lake and expansive property make it feel like your own private oasis. Upgrade your luxurious experience by staying in one of the private cottages or the 5,400 square foot presidential inspired Lake House that George Bush himself has visited. These accommodations come with your own private concierge on hand to curate the perfect stay for you and your guests.
As your travel plans begin to pick up, make sure to consider Georgia’s Lake Country, where you can get away from it all, but still feel like a local.
