You Get What You Give

You Get What You Give

Good Grit partners with B Charitable for Giving Tuesday and beyond

Words by Paige Townley

As the old adage goes, “It’s better to give than to receive,” and it’s that idea behind B Charitable, an app-based platform that seeks to make it easier for individuals to donate to organizations that matter to them. “We all have the potential to do more, to serve more, to give more,” says the organization’s founder, Jonathan Shugart. “With B Charitable, we want to change the culture and make it easier for people to help other people.”

Jonathan, a former tax attorney, got the idea for B Charitable after working with wealthy individuals for years as they sought to intentionally establish their charitable giving. Often, their money was put into donor advised funds, which makes giving easier but it also typically limited to wealthier individuals. “It’s always great to see that light in someone’s eyes when they are talking about charitable giving and being excited about giving something and not expecting anything in return,” Jonathan says. “I would always leave those meetings feeling that it shouldn’t be a conversation restricted to just the wealthiest. It should be happening at every kitchen table in the country.”

That’s when the lightbulb moment happened: Jonathan began working on a giving platform that with just a few clicks allows someone to transfer money into a charitable giving fund that can then be—when they are ready—distributed out to a charity of their choice. The donor receives the tax benefit upon the initial contribution, and then it can be sent to charities as a one-time grant, or even set up as a recurring transaction. The funds can also be put in one of three investment options to help it grow tax free before it’s distributed to charities, of which it currently has 1.2 million in its database. B Charitable also uniquely allows for users to create public fundraising campaigns, which allows friends, family, co-workers, and anyone with a desire to help to come together and raise money for a specific charity (or charities).

Like B Charitable, Good Grit strives to support and highlight those working to help others. Throughout 2021, Good Grit has highlighted amazing people and organizations that do just that. There’s the Atlanta-based Giving Kitchen, which is dedicated to providing emergency support, including financial support, to food service workers through and after the pandemic. And you can’t forget Jason Roberts, who started the Better Block Foundation, a nonprofit that seeks to educate, equip, and empower communities and their leaders to reshape and reactivate already built environments to promote and create growth. The list of people and nonprofits that are dedicating their lives to benefit others is long, and that’s why Good Grit has partnered with B Charitable to create the Good Grit Fund. While we will continue to highlight these organizations on the pages of the magazine and online, the fund is our way to actively support them and inspire action. Please consider joining us this Giving Tuesday and all year long in supporting those who are assisting those in need. Click here to give now.
