A weekend guide to a family-friendly getaway in one of Texas’ most walkable cities
Words by Cat Barnes, Creative Director
Before becoming parents, my husband and I swore we’d never be the people who stopped traveling.
Our daughter, Zoe, had been on flights before her first birthday. We’d packed bottles through airport security, mastered diaper changes in airplane bathrooms, and convinced ourselves we had family travel completely figured out.
Then she turned ten months old.
Suddenly, every beautifully planned itinerary revolved around naps that moved without warning, meals that happened an hour late, and a tiny traveler with very strong opinions.
Visiting San Antonio was supposed to be another carefully orchestrated weekend.
Instead, it became the trip that reminded us the best travel experiences—whether you’re exploring solo, with friends, or with a baby in tow—often begin the moment you throw the schedule out the window.
Instead of checking boxes, we wandered the River Walk, lingered over margaritas, ducked into places that caught our eye, and discovered that San Antonio is a city best experienced at an unhurried pace.
The gateway to our iconic Texas weekend? Where we stayed.
From the moment we walked through the doors of Hotel Emma, the stress of traveling with a baby seemed to melt away. Tucked inside a beautifully restored 19th-century brewhouse in the heart of the Pearl District, the hotel somehow manages to feel both effortlessly luxurious and genuinely welcoming.
We were greeted by a kind soul named Javier, who began sharing the building’s history as we made our way inside. I tried my best to listen, but I was distracted by everything around me: the patterned tile beneath my feet, the custom lettering, and the thoughtful design details that made me wonder whether they’d been there for a century or had been installed yesterday.
My Creative Director heart didn’t stand a chance.
But what impressed me even more than the design was the service.
Before we’d even reached our room, Javier looked at our daughter, smiled, and asked, “Would you like us to arrange a babysitter for tonight? Or both nights?”
It wasn’t just the offer itself. It was the unmistakable sense that someone was already thinking one step ahead, making sure we could spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the trip.
That feeling followed us all weekend.
A crib was already waiting in our room; a small moment but one that captured Hotel Emma perfectly. Every interaction felt thoughtful. Every detail felt intentional. The kind of hospitality that doesn’t draw attention to itself, but quietly removes every little point of friction so you can focus on enjoying where you are.
With that, our weekend in San Antonio officially began.
What followed wasn’t exactly what we’d planned, but it’s an adventure we’ll remember forever. Here’s how we spent 48 hours exploring San Antonio, and why we’d recommend doing much the same.
Day 1
Afternoon
One of Hotel Emma’s greatest advantages is its location.
Nestled in the heart of the Pearl District, it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring on foot without ever feeling like you’ve exhausted the neighborhood.
Our first stop was Pullman Market, a specialty market that somehow manages to be a grocery store, bakery, butcher shop, kitchen store, wine market, and dining destination all at once. Even if you’re only stopping in for one thing, it’s nearly impossible not to wander every aisle before leaving.
Lunch led us to Mezquite, where tacos, fresh guacamole, and margaritas marked the official beginning of vacation. The stress of travel slowly gave way to chips, salsa, and sunshine, and for the first time all day, there was nowhere else we needed to be.
Back at Hotel Emma, another small interaction reinforced everything we’d already begun to notice.
Our housekeeper, Nelda, stopped to chat while preparing the room for turndown service, and before long we were swapping stories about family, dogs, and life in San Antonio. It wasn’t a grand gesture or an over-the-top moment—it was simply genuine hospitality.
By then, it had become clear that Hotel Emma isn’t memorable because of one spectacular detail. It’s memorable because every small interaction leaves you feeling genuinely cared for.
Evening
One of my favorite discoveries in San Antonio was that the best plan for dinner is often no plan at all. Instead of rushing toward a reservation, we started walking.
The stretch of the River Walk that winds through the Pearl feels worlds away from the bustling tourist scenes many people picture. Cypress trees shade the pathways. Turtles bask along the water’s edge. Public art appears around unexpected corners. Restaurants spill onto patios that seem designed for lingering.
Eventually, we found ourselves at Otto’s Ice House, where burgers, cold beers, and one of those perfect spring evenings reminded us that some of the best meals are the ones you never planned.
The walk back was every bit as memorable as dinner.
As the sun dipped lower, the River Walk seemed to settle into its evening rhythm. Locals strolled with dogs, friends gathered on patios, and kayakers drifted quietly beneath the bridges. Every turn offered another reason to slow down.
Somewhere along the way, I found myself wondering why more cities don’t feel like this.
Night
One of Hotel Emma’s greatest gifts to traveling parents? Babysitting services. With our daughter well attended to, my husband and I pulled out the two wo wooden tokens we received at check-in, which were redeemable for complimentary margaritas. Naturally, we knew exactly what to do with them.
We wandered downstairs and through a set of double doors into what felt less like a hotel and more like a movie set.
The Library is one of those rooms that makes you stop mid-sentence. Towering bookshelves. Rich textures. Dim lighting. A space that feels both grand and impossibly intimate.
A bartender greeted us from a vintage bar cart and shared the story behind the evening’s cocktail: the La Babia Margarita, inspired by the historic Hacienda La Babia in Coahuila, Mexico.
After our margaritas, we were instructed to head upstairs, climb the library staircase, and pass through a hidden door.
Obviously, we did.
On the other side waited Sternewirth, Hotel Emma’s iconic bar. There was live music, warm lighting, incredible cocktails, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours.
It was there that I realized something important: sometimes the best night out is one that never leaves the hotel.
Day 2
Morning
We started the day the same way we’d ended the last one: slowly. We’d submitted our room service order the night before—a travel hack I highly recommend.
Breakfast arrived just as the city was beginning to wake up, giving us one more excuse to enjoy our room before heading to the San Antonio Zoo.
As a Texas native, I’d heard about the zoo for years but had somehow never visited. Arriving shortly after opening turned out to be the perfect strategy. The crowds were light, the weather was beautiful, and the animals all seemed to be enjoying the quiet start to the day right alongside us.
Flamingos greeted us at the entrance, gorillas stole the show, and we probably spent more time watching the alligators than anyone should. It was an easy, unhurried way to spend the morning, and one I’d happily recommend whether you’re traveling with little ones or simply looking for a few hours outdoors.
Afternoon
That afternoon, we found ourselves back at the River Walk. This time, it led us to Elsewhere Garden Bar & Kitchen.
Calling it a restaurant doesn’t quite do it justice. Part beer garden, part outdoor oasis, Elsewhere feels like stepping into someone’s impossibly cool backyard. Lush greenery spills over every corner, colorful seating is tucked beneath the trees, and swings overlooking the river practically insist you stay a little longer.
We grabbed a couple of beers, shared a few snacks, and claimed a swing overlooking the water. As turtles lazily drifted past, I found myself appreciating the beauty of doing absolutely nothing.
No schedule. No destination. Just being outside together.
Evening
Before dinner, we grabbed a quick meal for Zoe from Larder, Hotel Emma’s beautifully curated market, then headed upstairs to get ready. That’s when I realized I’d packed exactly zero outfits for an actual date night out. In my defense, I hadn’t expected San Antonio to convince us to stay out past dinner. Thankfully, a quick stop in Hotel Emma’s thoughtfully stocked gift shop solved that problem when a Sandero denim jumpsuit somehow found its way into my heart (and my suitcase).
Once the babysitter arrived, we made our way downstairs to Hotel Emma’s signature restaurant, Supper. Like so many of our favorite moments from the weekend, we didn’t even have to step foot off the property.
We claimed a table on the patio and promptly ordered far more food than two people reasonably needed: oysters, fish heads, macaroni and cheese, whole branzino, and a bone-in pork chop.
Still enjoying our night out, we wandered a few steps down the street to Jue Let.
The space is an immediate sensory delight. Rich reds, peach tones, vintage-inspired décor, and just enough personality to make any design lover feel right at home. I ordered a martini with three different stuffed olives while Andrew opted for one of the bar’s creative takes on a highball.
At one point, we noticed people quietly disappearing through what looked like an ordinary door.
Naturally, we followed.
Behind it? A hidden karaoke bar.
For a brief moment, we considered grabbing the mic. Instead, another temptation won out: one more quiet walk through the Pearl before heading back upstairs to our sleeping girl.
Day 3
Morning
The next morning, our last in San Antonio, arrived far too quickly. We ordered breakfast to the room one last time, slowly packed our bags, and tried our best to convince ourselves we were ready to leave. Just as it had on arrival, Hotel Emma made departure feel effortless. Our luggage was collected, transportation to the airport was arranged, and somehow all we had to do was enjoy one last morning in The Pearl District.
Before heading out, we made one final stop at Larder for a pair of quad lattes, because even the best weekends deserve extra caffeine before the trip home.
On the flight back to Atlanta, all three of us were asleep before we even reached cruising altitude.
When I woke up, I found myself thinking less about everything we hadn’t managed to squeeze into the weekend and more about everything we’d discovered because we hadn’t.
The River Walk.
Long walks with nowhere to be.
Unexpected margaritas.
Turtles.
Hidden doors.
Hotel Emma.
San Antonio reminded me that the best trips rarely unfold exactly as planned. They’re found in the conversations you didn’t expect to have, the restaurants you stumble upon, and the afternoons you never quite get around to ending.
Sometimes the best itinerary is simply leaving enough room for the destination to surprise you.
