Welcome to Hotel Intel—where we do the check-in before you do.

This time, we’re headed to Houston, Texas, where sprawling city limits give way to neighborhoods with distinct personalities. These boutique stays from Austin-based Bunkhouse Hotels put you in the heart of two of the city’s most vibrant districts, making it easy to experience Houston one neighborhood at a time.

Hotel Daphne

Set on a street corner in Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood, Hotel Daphne’s marriage of styles and sentiments—organic Arts and Crafts, 1920s glam, and a slight nod to the trippy looks of the 1960s—echoes the imaginative, spunky personality of the surrounding community, which was established on utopian ideals in the late 1800s.

The property places a premium on art, with original works from co-developer Bob Ackerley’s personal collection adorning the walls of its common spaces. Some pieces rotate throughout the year, giving the hotel the feel of a living gallery. Nature gets her due, too; a lush, expansive courtyard is alive with greenery, and developers took care to preserve several mature oak trees on the property.

Its location on the edge of one of Houston’s most walkable neighborhoods invites exploration. Stroll a couple of blocks to 19th Street to browse boutiques like Jubilee and Manready Mercantile, antique stores, an outpost of Austin-based Torchy’s Tacos, a toy museum, and the restored 1920s Houston Heights Theatre, which hosts a busy calendar of concerts. Don’t miss Fly High Little Bunny, a family-owned jewelry shop where you’ll find eclectic, nature-inspired pieces handcrafted by the owners.

Where You’ll Sleep

The energetic yet relaxed atmosphere downstairs carries into each of the hotel’s 49 guest rooms. Handmade tile in vibrant jewel tones pairs with antique furnishings from a mix of eras, while upholstered headboards wrapped in surreal landscape patterns add an unexpected touch. Custom works by Austin- and Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Valenti bring even more personality to the thoughtfully layered spaces.

Don’t Miss

Houston’s dining scene is as expansive and diverse as you’d expect, but Hypsi may convince you to stay put. Start with a glass of Italian wine during aperitivo—the Italian take on happy hour—before settling into the restaurant’s Mediterranean-inspired menu. And whatever you do, don’t skip the mozzarella cart, which rolls tableside with a tempting selection of cheeses and accompaniments.

Before calling it a night, slip into Bar Daphne. Inspired by the private clubs that flourished during Prohibition, the intimate space feels equal parts sophisticated and inviting. Signature cocktails like the bourbon- and Spanish brandy–based Untitled #1 and Watercolor No. 35—a tequila cocktail brightened with raspberry, lime, and passionfruit—pair perfectly with the art-filled interiors, anchored by John Alexander’s large-scale painting Life on a Merry-Go-Round.

Hotel Saint Augustine

Tucked into Houston’s Montrose District—a neighborhood known for its independent shops, galleries, and restaurants—Hotel Saint Augustine reflects the creative spirit of its surroundings. Just across the street, the renowned Menil Collection campus is home to an art museum housing more than 17,000 works, along with green spaces and an arts education center that have helped define the neighborhood’s cultural identity.

Like the Menil itself—where everything from ancient tribal masks to Andy Warhol paintings shares gallery space—the hotel balances restraint with bold expression. An understated exterior of wood, neutral tones, and clean lines gives way to dramatic interiors, where a gleaming cherry-red ceiling, walls of windows, and deep-blue gathering spaces are punctuated by mid-century modern furnishings and cubbyhole displays filled with carefully curated objets d’art.

The hotel’s 71 guest rooms are spread across five two-story buildings connected by landscaped courtyards, with a circular pool at the property’s center. The resulting residential feel helped earn Hotel Saint Augustine a coveted MICHELIN Key, making it the only hotel in Texas to receive the distinction in 2025.

Where You’ll Sleep

Minimalist doesn’t mean minimal here.

Plush upholstered headboards, soft velvet drapes in shades of gold, deep blue, and ochre, and expansive windows create rooms that feel warm, inviting, and quietly luxurious. Spacious bathrooms with oversized showers encourage lingering a little longer, while select rooms offer generous private terraces overlooking the courtyards.

Don’t Miss

Augustine Lounge serves breakfast before transitioning into an all-day menu of sandwiches, dips, sweets, and cocktails. The beverage program is equally thoughtful, with creative zero-proof options like the Lychee Cobbler, made with Seedlip Spice, lychee orgeat, and fresh lime.

Enjoy your drink in the property’s state-of-the-art listening room, where vinyl spins alongside a beautifully restored Otari MX5050 BII-2 tape recorder, or settle in poolside for an afternoon that stretches a little longer than planned.

For dinner, reserve a table at Perseid, the hotel’s Gulf seafood-focused bistro. Named for the annual Perseid meteor shower that lights up August skies, the restaurant offers a subtle nod to Houston’s enduring connection to space exploration while celebrating the bounty of the Gulf Coast.

Worth a Look: The Marlene Inn

For travelers who prefer the charm of an intimate inn, The Marlene Inn offers a refreshing alternative to a traditional hotel stay. Housed in a beautifully restored nine-room Neoclassical mansion, the property pairs historic character with thoughtful touches like a complimentary full breakfast and individually designed guest rooms. Even if you’re staying elsewhere, Bar Madonna, its Paris-inspired cocktail bar, is worth a visit, drawing both Houstonians and visitors with one of the city’s most inviting cocktail programs.

Around here, we believe a great hotel should do more than give you a place to sleep. It should introduce you to a neighborhood, connect you to local culture, and make you want to linger a little longer. These Houston stays do exactly that.
