When you find yourself in traffic between Orlando and Tampa the best thing to do is pull over and steer towards Lakeland. More than a detour, this quaint, southern town is a proper destination with iconic architecture, foodie eateries, and vintage finds—all in a walkable downtown. It’s the ideal spot for a girlfriends’ getaway or an anniversary weekend, a must-visit spot for 2025.

Royal Swans and Frank Lloyd Wright — When you drive around Lake Morton it’s hard to miss the swans. With feathers flapping and endless honking, every bird in this flock is a descendant of a pair of swans gifted to the city by Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. They give Lakeland its nickname, the “Swan City.”

Just across Lake Morton is another unexpected surprise, Florida Southern College. This private university boasts 13 Frank Lloyd Wright structures, making it the world’s largest collection! Known as “Child of the Sun,” it includes two chapels, a Water Dome, and an Esplanade — all in the artist’s “Prairie Architecture” style. Stroll the campus or take a tour of this National Historic Landmark.

Make a Day of It — One of Lakeland’s best outdoor amenities is Bonnet Springs Park, a great spot for biking, hiking, and letting the kids work out the wiggles. Gardens, outdoor workspaces, and playgrounds are all accessible by free shuttle.

After you’ve soaked up the sunshine, make some time for shopping. From boutiques to vintage shops, there are plenty of places for discovering unique treasures. We love East of These, Top Buttons, and Scout & Tag. For vintage wares, check out Lloyd’s of Lakeland and June Taylor, which boasts well-curated art from artists like the Florida Highwaymen. Finally, shop for Disney memorabilia at the Lakeland Antique Mall. Then, as night falls, grab a quick dinner and a movie at the Silvermoon Drive-In.

Grab a Bite — What began as a farmer’s market booth, Born & Bread Bakehouse tops everyone’s list of favorite eateries. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday with a line out the door. Try the sourdough loaves, French-style croissants, and freshly-baked sweets — just don’t skip the cinnamon rolls!

Another crowd-favorite is LoveBird Almost Famous Chicken. It’s hand-battered, brined for up to 24 hours, and kissed with a house-made spice blend that will make your mouth water. Enjoy your bird with some scratch-made sides like collard greens, smoked gouda mac, and skin-on crispy fries.

ore than a detour, this quaint, southern town is a proper destination with iconic architecture, foodie eateries, and vintage finds—all in a walkable downtown.

Our final recommendation is the Joinery, a modern food hall and brewery on the banks of Lake Mirror. There are a variety of culinary stalls and bars as well as shops, bookstores, and event stages. I suggest Sābu for ramen, followed by a scoop of Mayday Ice Cream.

Drink Up — Whether you’re sipping a cup of Joe or savoring a cocktail there are plenty of places to sit and relax. For a caffeine fix try Concord Coffee, Unfiltered Lakeland, and Black and Brew, a coffee and lunch spot attached to the Lakeland Public Library. For drinks, visit Orange Blossom Brewing Company, Revival, or Swan’s Brewing, which also features a punk rock flea market.

Where to Stay —Overlooking Lake Mirror, The Terrace Hotel Lakeland is a historic beauty with a proper bar and a classy dining room lit by towering arched windows.

Nearby — A short drive in either direction takes you to two local favorites: The Barn in Lake Alfred, a seasonal antique market with gifts, crafts, and a back porch tea room; and The White Oak Cottage in Lithia, which is a bistro and boutique known for small plates and home-decor.
